Bedroom Window Treatments

When thinking about what kind of window treatments you want for your bedroom you have to take into account many factors such as how much privacy you need, the amount of morning sun that will shine in your window and are there any street lights that may disturb your sleep. These are the practicalities to be thought of but then there are issues of a more personal nature such as what mood do you want to convey in the bedroom. Dark and mysterious, playful, maybe a clean crisp feel. More than any other room in the house the ’feel’ of the bedroom is important.

Blinds need to be a perfect fit so it is advisable to have them custom made. The various types of blinds available include plastic roller styles, wooden or louver, Venetian or roman shades. There are many different colors to suite you existing decor and to start from scratch. Naturally, custom made blinds will be a bit more expensive but when you consider the importance of quality coverings for your bedroom windows, it is probably money well spent.

Curtains can add a softer appearance to the bedroom and there is sure to be a style to suit your style including the a tie-back style curtain combined with an insulated shade, a more dramatic style complete with tassels and corded tie-backs, heavier pleated curtains with backing to keep out the light, cold and prying eyes and for the old fashioned styled room a tapered valance in a printed fabric. For the more modern look layered curtains comprising white or cream continuous curtaining covered by heavier curtains that can be pulled back during the day. Fabric will be dependent on style and decor and can be selected from all kinds of different fabrics including tapestries, damasks, velvets, sheers, cottons, silks, satins, chenille, linen, polyester, polyvinyl, chiffons. Large scarves, flowing chiffon and silk make for a very mysterious yet feminine bedroom in a casual decor. This style is mostly used in light airy rooms in summer or in tropical regions.

Valances are often used either with curtains or over the top of blinds for a different effect. Valances are long strips of fabric, usually two types or two colors, twined together that are wrapped around a curtain rod to decorate a window. Curtains are often made using the same fabric as bed line n or cushions for a matching effect. For a more formal bedroom swags are used, these ‘crowns’ sit above the curtain rod and echo opulence, they can be made of fabric, wood or wrought iron.

Whatever style of window treatment you decide on, it is good to remember that your bedroom curtains are probably the first thing you see each morning and one of the last things you see each night. So it is advisable to be sure they are pleasing to the eye and relaxing to the mind.
